Why masks fog, and what actually stops it
A fogged lens is not a fault. It is condensation forming on a microscopically rough surface, and the surface is usually a film of release agent left over from moulding the lens. Deal with the film once and treat the glass before each swim, and the problem goes away for the life of the mask.
What is actually happening
Warm, humid air from your face meets cool glass. Water vapour condenses into thousands of tiny droplets, and those droplets scatter light. An anti-fog treatment does not stop condensation; it makes the water spread into an even, transparent sheet instead of beading.
That is why a treated mask can still be wet inside and perfectly clear, and why wiping a fogged lens with a finger works for about thirty seconds.
The one-time preparation on a new mask
Tempered glass leaves the factory coated in a thin silicone film. Until it is gone, nothing sticks. The standard method is a small amount of non-gel white toothpaste rubbed over the inside of the lens with a fingertip, left a few minutes, then rinsed — repeated two or three times.
Do this only on bare tempered glass. If your mask has an anti-scratch or anti-fog coating from the manufacturer, abrasive toothpaste will ruin it; use a dedicated mask cleaner instead, and check the manual before you start.
Treating the lens before each swim
Apply anti-fog to a dry lens, spread it across the whole inside surface, wait the time the bottle specifies, then rinse briefly with fresh water. A quick rinse is important: unrinsed product stings the eyes and, in some cases, makes the fogging worse.
Treating a wet lens is the most common mistake. The water dilutes the product before it can bond and the mask fogs on the first descent.
Reef-safe products, and why it matters here
Anything you rinse off a mask goes into the water you are swimming in. Reef-safe formulations avoid the surfactants and preservatives most implicated in coral stress, and they work just as well. Given how little product a season uses, there is no real argument for anything else.
The same logic applies to sunscreen, which is worth choosing on the same basis if you snorkel over reef at all.
Household alternatives that genuinely work
A drop of baby shampoo in a bottle of fresh water, shaken and used as a spray, is a long-standing and effective treatment. Rinse it well, because it stings. Saliva is the field expedient everyone knows about; it works, briefly, and it is what you use when you have forgotten the bottle.
What does not work is dish soap in any quantity — it foams, it stings badly, and it leaves a residue that attracts more fogging next time.
Fit and breathing contribute too
A mask that leaks slightly around the nose lets warm exhaled air into the lens area, which fogs it faster than anything else. If a treated mask fogs quickly and unevenly, check the seal before you blame the product.
Breathing out through the nose habitually has the same effect. Snorkelling breathing should be entirely through the mouth, which takes a few minutes to become automatic.
Full-face masks and airflow
Full-face designs handle fogging differently: incoming air is routed across the visor to sweep moisture away. When one of these fogs it is usually a sign that the seal is imperfect or the flow channels are blocked with salt.
Rinse them thoroughly in fresh water after every use and let them dry fully open, and the built-in system does its job.
Storing the mask so the work lasts
Rinse in fresh water, shake out, dry away from direct sun, and store in the box with nothing pressing on the skirt. Sun degrades silicone and heat distorts it, and a distorted skirt leaks, which brings back both problems at once.

When the mask is fogging for a different reason
If a treated mask fogs only along one edge, or fogs immediately every time, the cause is usually not the lens at all. A skirt that has hardened with age lets a thin stream of warm air in from below, and that air condenses on the coldest part of the glass first — which is why the fog appears at an edge rather than across the middle.
Press the mask gently to your face and hold your breath for a few seconds. If the fog stops advancing, the seal is the problem and no amount of anti-fog will fix it. A skirt that feels stiff rather than tacky has reached the end of its life, and replacing the mask is the only real remedy.
